ABSTRACT

Gothic also happened to be the castle style. In the Beauties O f Stow (sic) o f 1753, the author, in admiring the Temple o f Liberty, observed, ‘This is a Kind o f Castle’ ,57 and so too was Alfred’s Tower at Stourhead. Thus temples o f liberty and feudal castles, far from being contrasted, could look very like one another, which Whig landowners, as well as their architects, perhaps found handy.
