ABSTRACT
In January 1985 at the Historical Association Teachers Conference I suggested, in an almost throwaway remark, that it might be possible to defend the teaching o f ‘national history’ from the view point o f a broadly progressive political stance. Joan Lewin pressed me on this in the summer and I now find m yself in the position o f having to do that.
