ABSTRACT

Nationalism and patriotism do not exist in a vacuum. They occur as a byproduct o f a country’s relationship with the outside world. So I want here to examine a particular tradition o f looking at the outside world - that o f the ‘Little Englanders - because it amounts to a form o f nationalism that many people still find attractive. It is a tradition usually associated with those whom A .L. Morton has termed the ‘bourgeois Radicals’ , in particular Cobden and Bright.
