ABSTRACT

The whole o f the Nichol was a safe area for children to play in - there was no motor traffic about, no fast carts, only the milkman. Boundary Street was our main playground. The whole o f one side was a blank wall, at the back of Jeremiah Rotherham’s and the shops on Shoreditch High Street. If we went to Half Nichol Street or New Nichol Street, it would be, ‘Get back to your own bloody turning.’ But in Boundary Street we had the place to ourselves.
