ABSTRACT

When I came home from Borstal in 1904 I found that the family had moved. They’d been slung out of Queen’s Build ings because they never paid rent. If you missed a week at 7s 6d a week there would be 155 to pay the next week. My mother had been on the booze and they’d never had the money. So they were slung out. They found a couple of rooms in Gibral tar Gardens, in some big tenement houses at the bottom - what they called ‘The Buildings’ . The rest of Gibraltar Gar dens were cottages, two up and two down. A lot of people from the Nichol had settled there, it was only a few streets away.
