ABSTRACT

In the Nichol there was a few Didicais1 and Irish, but you never saw a Jew. All that you knew about them was what you leamt in the Mission. I don’t think I ever saw a Jew until we moved to Bacon Street. Suddenly you saw them everywhere. Hundreds o f thousands had come to England in the 1890s2 and you would still see them coming from the London docks: they came in horse brakes and some o f them had white sheepskin coats. They were very poorly dressed - you never saw them in suits except on Shabbas.
