Impact of trauma on child mental health
The complex mechanisms through which trauma affects child mental health are discussed for different vulnerable groups. The types and prevalence of child mental health problems among children in care and refugee and homeless youth demonstrate the specific needs of these groups. Evidence on the impact of risk factors is followed by extensive consideration of resilience-building across different domains (child, family, school, community and society) according to the influential socioecological systems theory. This highlights opportunities for interventions to break the cycle of disadvantage, which will be discussed in subsequent chapters.
