ABSTRACT

Why This Works-The traditional salt dough recipe has less salt and no vegetable oil or alum. The vegetable oil and alum help to keep the dough from cracking while rolling it into shape. Heating the ingredients on the stove makes the dough less sticky when rolling it out. The vegetable oil and extra salt have an added benefit of giving a pockmarked texture that resembles the fried texture of an egg roll and a spring roll. Thai Unryu paper is a lightweight and translucent paper. It has long winding kozo fibers that run organically throughout the paper. When it is torn, it creates a soft feathered edge. For this project, the orange and green paper will simulate the vegetables and shrimp inside the spring rolls. Thai Unryu paper can be found at an art supply store or online. Creative Paperclay® is a modeling material that air-dries. It can easily be sculpted, molded, and shaped while it is moist. It is premixed, so it is a quick way of creating the filling for the rolls. It also has the ability to capture fine details or be sanded, neither of which is needed for this project.
