ABSTRACT
Crime in America Crime rates are at their lowest levels in decades. The odds of getting shot and killed in most major cities are much lower now than they were in the 1980s. Unfortunately, data on crime are not as definitive nor as accurate as one would think. Although crime data are much more exhaustive and comprehensive than firearm supply data, there are still discrepancies and inaccuracies. The primary source of crime data in the United States is the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI’s) Uniform Crime Report (UCR). For homicide, there are two sources of data: (1) the FBI’s Supplementary Homicide Report (SHR) and (2) the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Fatal Injury Reports.
