About 1700 the Keira chiefs ruled as sacred kings over a Fur state, but one which was rapidly embracing many other ethnic groups. The Fur were apparently ruled through a hierarchy of Fur office-holders and, although some non-Fur groups, seemingly of slave status, were physically moved into the Fur area and largely acculturated, in the main the other ethnic groups were ruled through their own chiefs.1
