ABSTRACT

In order to understand fully the extreme plight in which the Province of Bihar and Orissa has been left by the sudden calamity on January 15, 1934, it is necessary to take into account a previous tragedy which happened in the south of the province, called Orissa, only a short time before. For the worst flood that had ever occurred during the past fifty years swept away the entire rice crop, in the Mahanadi Delta, for hundreds o f square miles.
