ABSTRACT

We have already seen how, when the earthquake had suddenly brought ruin to North Bihar, Mahatma Gandhi was working in South India, where the evil o f untouchability-the curse of the “ pariah,” 3-is more cruelly practised than in any other part of India. His first instinct, as he has told us, was to abandon everything else and go to the help of the distressed. But he saw at once that this was a temptation which had to be resisted.
