ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a general overview of the book, including the research questions and the way in which they are answered. The first section defines the subject and focus of this study, explaining the research problématique and delimiting its boundaries, followed by two subsections establishing the aims and questions and summarizing the book’s structure. Section two provides some context for the research by mapping the field of international aviation and maritime transport, with regard to climate change. This includes their current and projected GHG emissions, the legal circumstances surrounding these sectors, and their role in the global emissions reduction conundrum. The second section is also used to introduce the main scientific and technical concepts and issues that will be referred to throughout the book. The analytical and legal framework, however, will be fully developed in Chapters 2 and 3, respectively.
