ABSTRACT

Parents want their children to succeed so that they go on to education or training, find an apprenticeship or get a job. If schools are to benefit from the true engagement of parents and offer them the space in which to engage, each one must develop some kind of parent voice group so that parents are discuss and relay their views to the school leadership and governors. Parent councils enable parents to contribute to decision-making on issues which affect them and their children. Depending on the size of the school, each class or tutor group nominates a parent to represent them. As an alternative to a parent council, schools are set up a parent forum to give parents opportunities to discuss school issues and policies which affect them. A parent class meeting is a forum for all parents of children in one class or tutor group to meet with the class teacher or tutor.
