ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses two key points: first, the impact of global integration and international mobility on Australian society, underlining the importance of appreciating and respecting social, cultural and religious diversity. Second, for all Australians, being able to engage with scientific concepts and principles, and approach problem solving in new and creative ways, are essential capabilities. The chapter describes three emerging themes from the perspectives of Australian students. These themes are; Science is facts and proof and religion is belief; Science and religion are compartmentalised; Ideas are emerging together. It utilizes Australian Curriculum: Science to consider how unpacking and extending the Science Understanding, Science Inquiry and Science as a Human Endeavour (SHE) strands and developing cross-curriculum linkages provide students with the opportunity to challenge their commonly held beliefs about knowledge. The SHE does through exposing students to two sub-strands: the Nature and Development of Science, and the Use and Influence of Science.
