ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how the process of evolution occurs and general thinking about evolution by students and teachers. It shows why understanding evolution does not mean a choice between religion or evolution and insight into how evolution can be taught in an effective and stimulating way. The chapter deals with teachers as well as students and their response to learning evolution in this way is positively highlighted in survey data and general feedback. A science lesson or topic in the National Curriculum is mandatory and, given the information provided in the chapter, teachers should believe with confidence that they can teach this topic without anxiety and with quality resources to do so effectively. It highlights the importance of learning about evolution with respect to contemporary issues, learning in science and developing essential scientific skills. The chapter outlines a systematic way of teaching about the process of evolution including the prerequisite content necessary to be able to understand these tricky concepts.
