ABSTRACT

Whenever you state your opinion, say ‘no’ to an unreasonable request, or ask someone to change his or her behavior, you are engaging in assertive communication. An assertive approach to communication involves the open expression of your own needs or wishes while respecting the rights and needs of others. Although not all new and expecting mothers struggle with assertive communication, this can be a significant source of anxiety and frustration for some women, who may find that they need to ask for help more frequently when they have young children (e.g., household care, childcare). Chapter 9 summarizes the verbal and non-verbal aspects of assertive communication, contrasting this style of communication with passive and aggressive communication styles. You will learn strategies for identifying where, when, and with whom you would like to be assertive, as well as developing a plan for what you will say.
