ABSTRACT

Every filming session of every video dance production has a completely different nature, but there are certain basic procedures for filming that can be useful whatever the situation. The dancers are creating the emotion, character, shape and energy that will be at the heart of artist completed video dance. Supporting the dancers to reach their full potential is not just a matter of taking care of the practicalities. Artist must also think carefully about the kind of direction they will give the dancers in terms of on-screen performance. Performing for the screen is a very different experience to performing on stage. When making video dance, the dancers remain physically removed from the audience, and yet their performance is central to the nature of the work and what it communicates to the viewer. The relationship between dancer and camera is central to making video dance and is a rich one, full of complexities and possibilities.
