ABSTRACT

Maximal V̇O2 limits the performance of aerobic exercise and a high V̇O2 max is essential for elite performance in several sports, but it does not define all aspects of aerobic fitness. The ability to respond rapidly to external stimuli, a vital ingredient of performance in many sports, is best described by the parameters of the kinetics of pulmonary oxygen uptake (V̇O2). This chapter explains pulmonary V̇O2 kinetics responses and analyses their assessment and interpretation. It discusses the development of V̇O2 kinetics in relation to age and sex, and examines their trainability. The underlying mechanisms are discussed and future challenges outlined.
