ABSTRACT

The development of movement patterns and their subsequent refinement into fundamental motor skills and combination and evolution into a range of sport-related skills substantially influences performance in youth sport. As children age, grow, and mature, they recalibrate the interactions between their changing bodies and environmental constraints and modify the development of motor skills to enhance a variety of sport-related motor performances. This chapter introduces motor development, comments on early specialisation in sport, and addresses the progress of key sport-related motor performances in relation to age, maturity status, sex, and training.
