ABSTRACT

Muscle strength often differentiates the elite youth athlete from the less successful performer. Stronger youth athletes are better prepared to master sport-related motor skills and to withstand the demands of sustained sport training and regular competition. Superior muscle strength also provides increased joint stability, minimises the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, and facilitates re-entry into sport following injury. This chapter reviews the development of muscle strength and examines the effectiveness of resistance training in enhancing strength. The mechanisms underpinning the development of muscle strength and training are explored with reference to improvements in the performance of youth athletes.
