ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book contextualizes the goals of set of guidelines, the actual guidelines for the production of a project, and a brief critical and historical contextualization, complemented by a set of specific examples. It is a contribution to remix studies, an interdisciplinary field that is relevant among various disciplines including Art, Design, Communication, Education, Digital Humanities, Music and Sound Studies, Literature, New Media, Media and Culture, Critical Theory, and Visual and Cultural Studies among others. The book explores basic principles of the creative process common during the early and mid-twentieth century, under the umbrella of modernism, when mechanical reproduction became part of daily reality. It offers guidelines written in response to questions about art and media that emerged during postmodernism, which is commonly discussed as a time of questioning what media was and could be.
