ABSTRACT

Chapter 8, “Versioning Time-Based Media,” focuses on the process of editing a source material with the purpose of creating multiple works that may differ in meaning. Versions usually gain cultural legitimacy based on their relation to previous or parallel works. The open guidelines of this chapter are designed to explore how versioning, as a creative method, plays an important role in the production of time-based media. Understanding the principles of versioning is pivotal for art and media design during a time when media is increasingly being repurposed in multiple forms for different interests once people have access to basic tools for appropriation, editing, mixing, and remixing.
