ABSTRACT

Embroidery – the word evokes images of patterns or designs on fabric embellished with threads and other decorative material. The transition of embroidery in China into a cultural heritage cannot be viewed in isolation. It is closely interwoven with the history of nation, its fortunes and the political, social and religious developments prevailing at different periods. In 1949, the Communist Party prevailed and won political power establishing the People’s Republic of China. The government set a direction for China with policies that were patterned after the Socialist Soviet Union’s models for education, religion, economics, and culture whilst encouraging a move away from many of the established traditions of past. The People’s Republic of China is a major economic power on the world stage. The dynasties, names of emperors and dates of their reign in Imperial China, can vary from different sources.
