ABSTRACT

Returning to school is a series of transitions from the moment the student is injured until they graduate school and beyond, much like a chain that has a series of links tying itself together from beginning to end. Students with cognitive difficulties following acquired brain injury (ABI) frequently have problems coping with anything new, unexpected or different. As young people increase in age, they normally develop skills to be able to complete greater amounts of more complex work more independently, and this is reflected in the demands of the curriculum and the learning environment. Colleges of Further Education can provide significant special needs support, but staff need detailed information about learning and behaviour needs if they are to do so effectively. Support for students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and disabilities is also available at universities and provision can usually be put in place upon transfer of information.
