ABSTRACT

It is important for parents and students to be reassured that teachers have the skills necessary to devise and oversee appropriate programmes for students with acquired brain injury (ABI). There is different use of terminology in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with new legislation in Wales removing the term Special Educational Needs (SEN) to be replaced with Additional Learning Needs (ALN). It is important to realise that ABI frequently leads to learning difficulties, although not necessarily apparent ones when the student first returns to school. Even if a student has made subsequent improvement following an ABI, there may be gaps in the 'building blocks' necessary for future learning because of time in hospital and away from school, and cognitive difficulties. Issues relating to cognitive style are particularly important to consider in terms of the changes that may be faced by a student with ABI.
