ABSTRACT

Rehabilitation can refer to the process of restoring skills and abilities that someone used to have but has lost due to illness or injury. Rehabilitation following acquired brain injury is a complex, enduring and often lifelong process with the aim of maximising potential. 'Once a child returns to school following acquired brain injury, the educational system becomes the primary service provider for that child'. The Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice in England emphasises the key role of the partnership between parents and professionals. Comprehensive multi-disciplinary assessment is an essential requirement for effective educational planning, and this needs to include information from the student's everyday settings as well as from standardised assessment. The need for ongoing communication between health, education and family personnel after a young person has been discharged from the hospital or rehabilitation facility cannot be overstated.
