ABSTRACT

BRAIN DAMAGE IN CHRONIC ALCOHOLICS: 15 A REVIEW OF THE PSYCHOLOGICAL EVIDENCE Ralph E. Tarter

There is mounting evidence from both neurological and psychological research that the chronic consumption of alcohol places the individual at risk for incurring cerebral pathology. However, the precise nature and progress of the cerebral pathology is, at this time, poorly understood. Moreover, the potential deleterious role of other contributing factors to the neurological and psychological disturbance is unknown. Thus, the age of onset of excessive drinking, nutrition, liver pathology, sex differences, congeners in the alcoholic beverage, and other extrinsic factors may be interacting with the alcohol to produce the observed deficits so far reported in the literature.
