ABSTRACT

Since our first report of computed tomography (CT scan) of the brain and neuropsychological assessment of a series of 20 alcoholic patients (Myrhed et al., 1976) several reports on the CT scans of alcoholic patients have been presented (e.g. Carlen et al., 1976; Fox et al., 1976; Epstein, 1977; Cala et al., 1978; G6tze et al., 1978; Hill, 1978; Bergman et al., 1979). The frequency of pathological findings varies with respect to how often cortical changes and ventricular enlargement are reported. The variability might be due to the lack of common criteria for the evaluation of the CT scans or to the use of different patient selection criteria resulting in the investigation of alcoholics of different types.
