ABSTRACT

In Philosophy and Nature Sports, Kevin Krein addresses a wide variety of philosophical issues related to activities such as backcountry skiing and snowboarding, climbing, and surfing. Here he introduces the notion that the central question driving this inquiry is a desire to better understand what people, including himself, find compelling about nature sports. Many nature sports participants expend enormous amounts of time, energy, and financial resources so that they can ski, climb, or surf. Some people devote their lives to such activities and some risk their lives within them. This book attempts to understand these activities better in hope that we can better understand what attracts us to them.
