ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a general overview of Krein’s understanding of nature sports. In it, Krein introduces the idea that nature sports, such as skiing, surfing, and climbing, are those sports in which a particular natural feature, or combination of natural features, plays at least one of the roles that human competitors or partners play in traditional or standard sports. Further, it examines the implications of this account of nature sports for athletes and their relationship to the environment, competition, and technology.
