ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to include considerations for other performance spaces, the nature of an event, and the role of genre and presentation style on a lighting design. One area of consideration for an overall design scheme relates to approaching a project based on the genre of the performance event. Genre refers to the specific type of event. Proximity of an audience also plays an important role in how a lighting design is conceived for a thrust or arena production. Arena productions become even tricker for the design team because the designers and director have to consider audience perspectives that completely encircle the stage and performers. Audience perspective should play a critical role in how a lighting designer lights a production. The lighting is relative and must be considered differently for each of the audience perspectives. A final variation of general lighting used in many thrust and arena situations involves the addition of a downlight for each of the lighting areas.
