ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the identification of a social mechanism helps to reconstruct the required connection. It discusses that all cases under investigation create impact by means of an incentive-based mechanism. In the cases under investigation, the generation of impact can be explained by means of the philanthropic door-opener mechanism. Mechanism-based theorizing proceeds beyond the identification of idiosyncratic patterns of events as its results are applicable to phenomena which may occur in a variety of different situations. Mechanisms are formulated by means of a retrospective hypothetical reconstruction of causal processes which lead to a given outcome, including the identification of necessary initial conditions and inputs. If resources are unavailable, they must be organized, generated or produced in such a way as to complete the necessary elements for the door-opener mechanism to work. In the case of The Chance, a clear win-win situation emerges as firms provide economic resources to their new staff, while trainees contribute their workforce.
