ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the main existing personality tests that can be used to detect dark triad personalities. The specific tests for each of the dark triad personalities are presented followed by other possible methods, such as interviews and some possible innovative tools. Another interesting means of detecting dark triad personalities was advanced by Spain et al. who suggested reports by knowledgeable others could be used for this purpose. Although screening for the dark side of personality can provide incremental knowledge about employees, the role such traits play in personnel selection is questionable. Campbell et al. cited Paulhus, Westlake, and Calvez, who focused directly on personnel selection in an interview context and found that narcissism positively predicted interviewer evaluations. Many organizations use selection interviews for hiring employees. In light of the quite modest predictive validities of selection interviews, these tools are disastrous in terms of screening dark triad personalities.
