ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we outline the dialogical approach in greater detail. In contrast to other approaches, multimodal artefacts here mediate between researchers and field actors. Additionally, the interpretation of visual artefacts is primarily conducted by these field actors, but under the guidance of researchers. Researchers utilize the different potentials of specific modes to express meanings related to particular life-spheres. Allowing field actors to express themselves through a multiplicity of modes, accordingly, provides richer accounts of their experienced life-worlds. From a dialogical perspective, multimodal artefacts are therefore ‘triggers’ for the in situ construction of meanings. We discuss which aspects of organization come into focus from a dialogical perspective and which research methods are primarily used. We introduce and outline a series of studies that illustrate the dialogical angle on multimodality. Finally, we suggest implications of different modes for dialogical research and outline specific challenges and opportunities regarding multimodality.
