ABSTRACT

Within the past 10 years, there has also been a growing body of sport for development and peace (SDP) scholarship initiated by sport management scholars which has advanced SDP theory and praxis in important ways. The purpose of this chapter is to examine these key areas in which the sport management discipline has, or can, contribute to advancing scholarship and praxis in SDP. Overall, the key contribution of sport management to the SDP field has been to bring a managerial focus to the design, implementation, and evaluation of programs and initiatives, and to examine the management of SDP organizations in ways that may differ from managing other sport (or non-sport) organizations. As such, this chapter explores six contributions that sport management can make to the study of SDP: theory, program design, and outcome assessment; event management; volunteer management; inter-organizational partnerships; organizational capacity building; and leadership of SDP programs and initiatives. The chapter concludes by outlining salient avenues where sport management can advance future SDP scholarship and practice.
