ABSTRACT

IT IS related of Othman that when he succeeded to the caliph­ ate, he made hot haste to mount the pulpit. Now the pulpit, which had been Muhammad’s, possessed three steps. Abu Bakr on becoming caliph had gone ahd sat on the second step; Omar in his turn of office sat on the third step, so as to show respect for the religion of Islam. Othman’s time arriving, he the applauded of fortune ascended to the top of the throne and there seated himself.
