ABSTRACT

Chinese outward foreign direct investment has attracted the attention of the academic, policy-making and business communities in recent years. By conducting interviews with regional economy representatives and considering the viewpoints of Chinese decision makers, we investigate the current expectations of the UK towards Chinese investment and the confidence of Chinese investors in a post-Brexit UK. We discuss the implications for policymakers and investors and conclude that the current relationship between the UK and China will not only show resilience but also offer further opportunity to develop two-way trade and investment. However, greater promotional effort and more sophisticated messaging must be adopted if the UK is to compete effectively with other European investment locations.
