ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book attempts to make a relevant connection between business history and the study of transnational economic regions, aiming in this way to contribute to regional, European and transnational history. It examines the impact of the transition to oil on the Rhine region. The book examines the transition from the perspective of locations, questioning how and why the new energy order that emerged after the Second World War affected the industrial and port clusters in the Rhine region. It describes how and why the transition to oil gave rise to demand for new infrastructure and its impact on transnational connections between clusters in the Rhine region. The book considers the decision-making processes of the two pipeline consortia, which showed that pipeline planning hinged on two things: seaport with deepwater and a secure and stable legal, fiscal and political environment.
