ABSTRACT

Rudolf Steiner had much to say about the individual human being, in relation to both his or her physical and spiritual development. The philosophical foundation for Steiner's worldview on many subjects, including the foundations for the development of the human being, is known as 'anthroposophy'. This chapter explores how Steiner introduced many new ideas out of his anthroposophical insights. These include the human being as consisting of body, soul and spirit and the various stages of the development of the human being. Steiner Waldorf education, if seen from the anthroposophical understanding of the human being, can create a healthy foundation for the whole life. As Steiner says, one must not educate in order to imprint 'learning' on the child but leave them as free as possible to learn and develop as individuals. It is only through this freedom that human beings can realise the impulses that they brought with them from before birth.
