ABSTRACT

Jung was firmly rooted and actively engaged with clinical material. In this chapter a brief history of the development of Jung’s complex theory is provided. As a core psychological principle within Jung’s methods that arose from his early clinical work, unconscious complexes express psychic energy within the personality through somatic expressions as well as affect and emotion that disturb the conscious mind and the body. Furthermore, complexes also carry powerful energy from the unconscious that have the potential to facilitate a change in consciousness. A few ways in which complexes manifest in Jungian art therapy are considered through clinical vignettes and images.
