ABSTRACT

The primary premise of the Family Building Projective Technique (FBPT) is to create a safe therapeutic environment for discussing family life issues by using the technique of building a fictional family. FBPT was initially developed by the author for adult clients in a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) after having observed that the experience of openly discussing family issues in a topic group setting was noticeably difficult for the PHP clients, especially when members had difficult family backgrounds and/or severe family life issues. In using the Family Building Projective Technique, the therapist begins by explaining to the group that they will be building a "fictional family". Although the FBPT was developed to help adults in a PHP to discuss family life issues, at times there will be group members that want to join the group and do not want to participate verbally.
