But again there was a limitation because only those who could read and understand would benefit. It has been left to this age of scientific achievement to discover a more rapid and effective means of transmitting human speech. The development of radio in its modern form marks the beginning of a new era of communication. The use of the word 'broadcast' brought back an old term into current use. The sower in the parable cast the seed abroad and, down the centuries, that word has described the method of scattering the seed over the whole surface of the field instead of sowing it in drills. In Dr Johnson's dictionary of 1827, broadcast was defined as 'the process of cultivating seed by sowing it with the hand at large or casting it broadly'.
