ABSTRACT

Teachers who cater well for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are likely to cater well for all pupils – demonstrating outstanding practice in their everyday teaching. The teachers have a keen awareness of the many factors affecting a pupil's ability to learn, not only characteristics of the individual but also aspects of the learning environment that can either help or hinder learning. The national curriculum, SEND legislation, examination reform and significant change to Office for Standards in Education inspection mean that teachers need to keep up to date and be able to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to meet the needs of all the learners they teach. Faculties and subject teams planning for outstanding teaching and learning should consider how they regularly review and improve their provision by auditing their professional development needs for SEND, based on the current cohorts of pupils.
