ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a possible lesson structure, and this structure consists of: an entry activity, sharing of objectives and learning outcomes, an engagement activity or starter, the main part of the lesson and a plenary. The starter is also a good place to elicit the pupils' ideas and misconceptions about the topic of the lesson. Some aspects of this situation are out of the hands of the science teacher–the time of day, the weather and the lesson immediately prior to one's are definitely out of control. Practical work is an essential feature of good science teaching. The aim of science is to find explanations that are supported by evidence for the events and phenomena of the natural world. Science is full of models, be they physical models or intellectual ones. Most lessons can be broken down into learning episodes, and this is particularly important when teaching pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities.
