ABSTRACT

The science faculty may need to adapt and adjust information for the special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) department within a school for the variety of reports and assessments that have to be completed. Target setting can be particularly useful for pupils with SEND who may well be outside the target group of pupils achieving age-related expectations at the end of key stage and whose learning objectives may therefore be different from the majority in the class. Science staff who report back to heads of year or senior staff needs to be clear how progress is monitored. Pupils should have a teacher assessment for science at the end of the primary phase, and their information should be available for use within departments. The advantage of a published scheme is that it generally has built-in National Curriculum links and assessment procedures. A number of useful methods can be used when recording assessments for practical work.
