ABSTRACT

According to Wikipedia, the term 'learning environment' is about cultural context and prevailing educational approaches, as well as the physical setting in which teaching and learning takes place. Unfortunately, young people with special educational needs and disabilities often find it difficult to operate successfully within their learning environment. There's so much within the learning environment that a PE teacher can't control, even a really good teacher with lots of experience, training and a real commitment to getting everyone learning, active and reaching their potential. Inclusion isn't just about making sure young people with special educational needs and disabilities get a decent chance; it's actually about helping each and every person, whatever their ability, to have a beneficial experience. There are many different ways a school can develop an inclusive learning environment for PE and sport and this chapter provides some of them. The chapter discusses a case study of Elliot, a youngster with a condition known as achondraplasia.
