ABSTRACT

This chapter offers both a retrospective view of interest and a focus on how the Model of Domain Learning (MDL) can suggest appropriate support for both capturing and sustaining interest in an academic domain. Supports discussed are centered on triggered interest, internal supports of sustained interest, and external supports for sustained interest. These supports are examined across the stages of expertise in the MDL (i.e., acclimation, competence, and proficiency) as well as in different academic domains. Finally, a conceptual model of supports for sustaining interest in a domain is presented and discussed.
