ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we approach the MDL as a framework that can be used to support learning in secondary school classrooms. In particular, we consider how conceptualizing learning as academic development benefits two major stakeholders in secondary education: students and teachers. For both of these groups of important individuals, we consider the research on the MDL and position them as learners within the MDL framework. We also examine how to best support the cognitive and motivational components and instructional practices. The chapter concludes with recommendations for research and practice.
