ABSTRACT

Philosophical research is primarily qualitative research that deals with ideas and ideologies. Musicians can engage philosophical processes in examining music and music in society by using qualitative methods such as deduction, induction, abduction, structuralism, positivism, feminism, and multiculturalism. Baggini (2002) denes philosophy as arguments that support and sustain ideas with rational justication. He identies three forms of rational justication: deduction, induction, and abduction. He posits that deduction is the most rigorous among the rational justication arguments. Deductive argument follows the logical procedure: A = B, B = C; therefore, A = C. rough this logic, the conclusion is indisputable as long as the premises A and B are correct.
